Oil & Gas Fire & Blast Protection
Few industries recognise the need for fire and blast protection more keenly than the oil and gas industries. A number of high-profile incidents have transformed oil and gas safety, perhaps none more notable or tragic than the Piper Alpha disaster. The complete destruction of the rig in a series of explosions and fires led to the deaths of 167 people, and a sea change in offshore safety.
Durasteel is a global standard in the protection of oil rigs and offshore platforms. Lightweight, resilient and tested against hydrocarbon fire, blast, impact, water and corrosion damage, Durasteel is the ideal solution for protecting both offshore and land-based oil and gas facilities.
The presence of one or more highly flammable substances, the high pressure at which they are pumped, the presence of electrics and heavy machinery and the isolated nature of offshore platforms make them extremely high-risk environments. Durasteel helps to mitigate these risks by ensuring that critical parts of the structure are shielded from damage, ensuring its integrity in the event of an accident.
Durasteel is tested to a range of global standards, and is up to two hours rated against even the most intense hydrocarbon and jet fires. Durasteel walls and encasements are most commonly used for valve enclosures, separation barriers and cable protection on rigs, ensuring that electrical fires are contained away from flammable materials, and that blasts and fires are contained from the rest of the rig.
As well as being used for fire and blast walls around pumps, valves and nearby modules, Durasteel is also widely used to increase the level of passive fire protection throughout a rig. With the potential for immediate and catastrophic damage from a fire or blast, it’s imperative that personnel are given the time and means to escape, unimpeded by the progress of a fire.
Durasteel oil and gas fire protection has been used in oil rigs, petrochemical processing plants, gas plants, LNG plants and floating LNG operations, among a myriad other applications. The lightweight construction of Durasteel barriers means deployment is generally quick and unobtrusive – protecting the facility without weighing it down.
Durasteel is an extremely versatile material, and can be deployed anywhere in a facility where enhanced fire and blast protection is required or desired. Previous oil and gas fire & blast protection projects have included doors, compartmentation and blast walls, ceilings, cable, valve and pipe enclosures, and storage compartmentation for volatile goods.
