High Voltage Cable Protection
While transformers pose the most obvious risk of fire and explosions, Durasteel protection might be required for high voltage cables. Often found running to and from electrical substations, high voltage cables pose a fire and explosion risk if a fault develops, or as a result of accidental damage.
These cables often run from substations to buildings, and are sometimes accessible from public areas, making it especially vital that they are protected from explosions and fire. There are numerous videos of incidents where a high voltage cable has been exposed due to building or maintenance work, and explodes in dramatic fashion.
The use of Durasteel cable protection forms an encasement around the high voltage cable, limiting the spread of a fire and absorbing the impact of an explosion, preventing any further damage. Durasteel can also prevent any physical or thermal damage caused by an external fire, which could impair their use or even lead to a chain reaction.
High voltage cables often involve both a primary and backup cable, which usually run in parallel. Durasteel high voltage cable protection is often employed to protect either one or both of these cables, isolating them from one another. If a fire or explosion occurs within one cable encasement, the other cable is protected from the damage, ensuring it remains operational.
Durasteel protection also shields high voltage cables from the effects of a building fire, ensuring their integrity in emergency situations, and are ideal for life safety cables requiring 2 hours insulated compartmentation.
This ensures that critical functions such as firefighting lifts, sprinklers and fire curtains remain operational, helping with the emergency response. Durasteel is commonly deployed to protect critical power infrastructure in large facilities with complex evacuation requirements (e.g. airports) and facilities with complex shutdown procedures (e.g. power plants).
Invicta are proud to have worked with UKPN, EDF Energy, National Grid, Scottish Power and SEESA on a variety of high voltage cable protection projects. Visit our Case Studies page to look at some of our past work, or contact us today to find out what we can do for your business or enterprise.
